The company was incorporated in 1885 to construct a railway line linking Duluth (Minn.) with Cheyenne (Wyo.). It succeeded in building 70 miles of rail line between Watertown and Huron, South Dakota, all of it financed by the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway, the GN's predecessor. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
